Römer Glasses

DATA

Acquired: 21 March, 2008
Acquired from: The Netherlands

The production of these wine glasses started in Germany in the 15th and 16th century and was gradually transmitted to the Netherlands. One of the characteristic features of Römer glasses are the protruding decorations, called plants, on the glasses' stems. It is said that they were attached to the stem so glasses would not slip from people's hands while their hands were covered in grease from the food.
